It is said that "desperate times call for desperate measures." I don't agree with that at all -- and neither did thousands of innovators that have been part and parcel of the forward momentum of this country.
Quoted in a July, 2008 article in the Star Tribune (Minneapolis) regarding the seasonal teen summer job market, "according to Joseph McLaughlin, a research associate with the Northeastern University Center for Labor Market Studies, . . . this is the toughest year on record for teens seeking summer work., "We're at a 60-year low," he said, noting that an estimated 3 million U.S. youths want jobs they can't find." (1) Further, stiff competition coming from older teens and young adults played a major role in decreasing employment opportunities.
"Competition also is coming from teens' slightly older peers, McLaughlin noted, as people 20 to 24 settle for entry-level jobs when they can't find positions in their chosen careers." (1)
The labor statistics for African-American youth and young adults nationwide are dismal as well. "Nearly one-quarter of Black high school students were unemployed (24.6 percent), as were 17.9 percent of Hispanics and 13.4 percent of whites. Among college students, unemployment rates were 9.9 percent for Blacks, 7.0 percent for Asians, 5.0 percent for whites, and 4.3 percent for Hispanics." (2) This according to the Dept of Labor, Bureau of Labor Statistics released for August, 2008.
Adding to the loss of jobs, both seasonal and traditional, is the recent credit/banking debacle! According to a recent CNN article, "Credit Crunch Freezes Hiring, Expansion" the collapse of available business credit lines and loans is shrinking the job pool exponentially. The article states, "Small businesses employ about half of all non-government employees in the U.S., according to Small Business Administration estimates." (3)
So what are youth and parents as well as young independent people to do in order to generate income and support themselves? One viable option is eCommerce/eBusiness. With a bit of team work, a family with, say 2 teenagers, could ostensibly sign up for 15-20 PTC/PTR accounts and have the young people [of working age (16+)] do the 'clicking.' All income generated from such activities can go into an 'earnings' account which the teens could be paid from. Since many of the PTC/PTR sites pay as little as $.01 per click [others pay as much as $100 per click] it will take quite a few accounts and hours to generate a decent income. However, when done in the comfort of one's home in a systematic and focused manner, the earnings can add up rather quickly. Young adults can also utilize PTC/PTR as an income method and would have to develop a 'system' to maximize earnings efficiently in order to generate meaningful cash.
Another often overlooked internet option is paying social networks! A household can sign up for a paying social networking account and then enlist all family, extended family, neighbors, church/civic group members, etc. to join as 'referrals.' Many social networks are compensating members per referral at a decent rate and an aggressive recruitment campaign can definitely generate simple income for a family or even a community based group such as a local girls & boys club or neighborhood center.
In these times of failing traditional job markets, successful income opportunities will have to be creative, innovative and most likely high tech! For more eCommerce/eBusiness recommendations, please visit: "Money 'Da' Easy Way - Affiliations"
